This picture has a grim twist. It was taken
outside of Manila in the summer of 1945...and it shows me, in the middle, surrounded by my
three platoon leaders and my supply Sgt., and 1st Sgt. We are plotting the movement across
the Tulihan River into the Manila Suburbs. Two days
later...having crossed the river, we six were sitting around a table in a Manila living
room, readying plans for our move the next morning across the Pasig River which bisected
Manila...the Japanese in great strength were on the other side.
As we were looking at maps, an artillery shell came in the
front window, exploded over the table, knocking all of us backwards...I thought I was
killed...felt parts of my body to see if they were still there...and after a few seconds
of 'feeling,' called out..."Hey...I haven't been hit!"
I was calling out to five dead men! These five!

| This picture was taken with my dearest,
oldest friend from Dayton, Ohio, on Bougainville, 1944. I was at the small dock helping
direct unloading of ammunition from some small ships when I heard a scream:
"Stan"...and the one in 3 million chance that the two of us would intersect on a
remote island...he was in charge of the small ship with ammo for my troops! And I was able
to tell him that I had gotten a letter a few days before from a Dayton friend who said
Chester Finn's wife just had a baby...news he had NOT YET HEARD. That baby is now the
famed educational expert, Chester Finn, Jr. No larger version available for this photo. |

This picture was taken in 1943 after the fall
of Manila, showing Regt. Commander Col. L.K. White passing along awards for heroism to
troops in the Regiment; and I am to his left, assisting in the presentation. The Regiment,
148th Infantry Regiment of 37th Division, was later awarded the Presidential Citation, as
a group, for the Manila campaign...an award equivalent to an individual soldier receiving
the Distinguished Service Cross. Click
